The drive towards cleaner and more energy efficient vehicles has become a subject
of great interest in private, public and government circles. This interest has fueled
discussions about the technological challenges and cost/benefit prospects of a variety
of advanced vehicle configurations at diverse stages of development. The most popular
architecture - the strong (full) hybrid - is being sold successfully by
Ford. At the same time, competing architectures - the micro-hybrid at one end of
